A POV camera usually records from a person's—or participant's—position, so the viewer experiences that perspective. POV stands for point of view. A camera mounted on a cyclist's chest and facing down the trail creates a first-person view of the ride. Move the same camera to the side of the trail and point it toward the cyclist, and it becomes a third-person action shot. The hardware has not changed; its visual role has.
POV is also different from field of view. Field of view describes how much of the scene a lens includes. A wide lens can make first-person footage feel more immersive, but width alone does not make a shot POV. A wide camera aimed back at the wearer is still showing the wearer from another position.

Body-mounted action cameras. An action camera becomes a POV camera when its position represents the participant's view. GoPro describes its chest mount as a way to create immersive, hands-free POV footage. Helmet and head mounts can move the lens closer to the direction the wearer is facing. The same camera can also be mounted to equipment or placed away from the body for a shot that is action-oriented but not first person. A body-mounted model therefore belongs to both conversations only when the mounting choice creates a participant-level perspective.
Wearable action cameras. Smaller action cameras can be attached directly to clothing or magnetic pendants.
